Description

Nacka Strand is located some 10 kilometers from Stockholm City center. Old industrial area started to get new life at 1980’s when AP-Fastigheter started to develop it. Today there is some 200 000 sqm in Nacka Strand, mostly office space and housing. The owner AP wanted to have art at the main square, J.P Svensson Torg. When I saw the place, I noticed that under the years the square had become a normal urban mess with too many different kinds of urban details. I asked permission to renew the whole square.

In the old square traffic sliced the small place in two. I wanted to give the space back to people. Since the square was close to the sea, it started to wave in my mind. We forced cars to drive in a valley, between ”Light Hills” with twinkling lights. All light poles, bollards etc. were taken away. Now the space has a natural flow. I strengthened the flow with new ”Light Walls” and glowing benches. It is light that holds up the sand-yellow concrete that flows over the edge facing the sea. This way new paving can be seen even from the harbor.

Square is made out of cast in site concrete. Benches have acrylic seats and a steel frame. They function also as lighting fixtures. Light Walls are at the same time space dividers and fixtures. Old ramp to an underground  garage is also covered with Light Walls. All the lighting is DMX controlled, which means light can follow music.

Skateboarders have taken the place as their own. We are planning to install a permanent sound system with the possibility of playing your own music with wireless iPod connection. Then the lighting will follow your music and the whole place will dance.

Nacka Strand is an old industrial area in  Stockholm. It  started to get new life at 1980’s  with development to office and housing area. The owner wanted to have new life to main square.  We were asked to re-design the square with high artistic goals.  Work included architecture, landscape and lighting.

The traffic sliced the small place in two. I wanted to give the space back to people. We forced cars to drive in a valley, between ”Light Hills” with twinkling lights.  All light poles, bollards etc. were taken away. Light is created with Light Walls, glowing benches and concrete installed Light-Hill LED’s.  It is light that holds up the sand-yellow concrete .

All the light with 10 000 LED’s is DMX controlled, which means light can follow music with over 100 hundred indidually controlled units. Skateboarders have taken the place as their own. We are installing a permanent outdoor  sound system with the possibility of playing your own music with wireless iPod connection. Then the lighting will follow your music and the whole place will dance.
